2017 Wedding Trends

 

Happy New Year……

We are kicking off 2017 with wedding trends and predictions for this year.

We hope this gives you some inspiration and ideas to help plan your wedding.

 

Wedding dresses

During 2016 we saw wedding dresses with capes on the catwalks, beautiful gowns will be seen on the aisles during this year.

Dresses with bows seem to be this years hot bridal trend, whether it be small delicate bow or a large oversize bow on the back of a dress, we are sure you will see this trend lots this year.

If white isn’t your colour, you can be a trend setter this year with a soft lilac, blue or pink gown. Pastel colours for Bridal and Bridesmaids dresses is favourite for 2017

Food and Drink

Don’t think traditional! Why not create themed food stations or bring in fun food vans.

Watch out for Desert Tables and Donut Walls, a great way to treat your guests to a late night snack.

Marble effects seems to be a popular theme and there are some fantastic looking ‘drip’ wedding cakes available.

Fairy lights are still gong to be popular throughout this year with paper flowers either hanging from the ceiling or dressing the tables. Team with delicate silk table runners in subtle shades to create a romantic look in your marquee.

Marquee Build at Bamburgh Castle

Please watch this short video of the crew at Bamburgh building a 27m x 12m marquee for a wedding with two reception pagodas on the front.

As you can see it was a beautiful day with fantastic views of the Castle. We wish they were all built this fast!!

Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Ryle, we caught up with them to discuss their wedding day…..

 

How long did it take to plan your wedding? It took about 10 months, we had our son Joshua in June 2014 and thought while I was on maternity leave I had time to plan ahead, with help from our parents.

What made you choose a marquee wedding reception? We have always loved the idea of a marquee wedding on the farm in Felton. It was the perfect setting. We went to Uncle Fred’s party and loved the marquee Waltons provided. Davy was a pleasure to work with and has fantastic staff to help.

 

 

Which suppliers did you use? We chose Peter Allan Catering, who is fantastic! We were delighted with everything. We had Melon and Parma Ham as starter, the main course was Roast Beef, Yorkshire pudding and Vegetables – carved and served by a designated guest at each table, wearing apron and chef hat! We then had a trio of desserts – profiteroles, Raspberry and white chocolate cheesecake and Lemon Posset. ryle 5

Why did you choose your wedding theme? Sarah’s (the Bride) favourite colour is coral, after seeing the perfect bridesmaids dress the colour scheme was decided. We had lots of our own ideas which were pulled together with help of our florist Sandra who is also a family friend.

 

 

 

Organisation was the key! Each of our suppliers were amazing to work with which was brilliant, we were very lucky!

 

The most memorable part of the day – the WHOLE day, we had the best day of our lives! Looking back now we can honestly say we wouldn’t change anything!

Sophie and Ben’s Wedding Day

A little reminder of a lovely summer wedding on the stunning North East Coast, we caught up with Sophie and Ben to hear about their day….

Why did you chose Bamburgh for your wedding location? We realised having travelled around various venues that we wanted to create our own space, and a marquee was a very beautiful way of doing that. Once we have decided that we thought – if we are putting up a marquee – we can put it anywhere! We love Bamburgh and the coast of Northumberland – it was the perfect back drop to show off Northumberland. And the clear marquee windows made it perfect.

 

 

 

hatch3More details about the day – We used Bolden Farmhouse Pantry as our caterers. Our menu was canapes, a buffet main course including Salmon en Croute, honey sweet potato and pomegranate salad. Pudding was a selection of four mini puddings! Delish!

Our florist was Hannah who runs Wildflower in Ouseburn. Amazing! Our photographer was the wonderful Ruth Atkinson from Liverpool and our cake maker was Ben (the Groom’s) mum and some family friends put their artist skills to the test!

 

 

 

hatch1What was you wedding theme, where did you get your inspiration from? My mum collected antique china and table cloths for years and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to put them to use! Essentially the theme was vintage / pastel/ country garden theme….all a bit jumbled together, but I think the overall effect worked.

 

 

 

 

hatch4Tips for other Brides and Grooms – get lots of people to help the day before your wedding! Don’t stress about details, on the day it’s just so wonderful seeing so many people you love and those things are nice, but not worth loosing sleep over. And finally DELEGATE! We loved our wedding da and really the more time you spend planning the more stressful it will get! Enjoy it and plan it quickly.

 

 

 

The most memorable moment – we went to take some photos on the beach and there was this incredible sunset and a lot of our family and friends were down on the beach enjoying it. It felt very joyful! Northumberland at its best!

Real Weddings – Sarah and David’s Summer Marquee

A beautiful summer garden wedding and the sun shone, we recently caught up with Sarah and asked her about her wedding.

How long did it take you to plan your wedding? It actually didn’t take us very long at all, in comparison to what most perceive it would take. We had 7 months between getting engaged and our wedding day. Quite a few people said it was impossible to plan a wedding in such a short period of time but with a relaxed and flexible approach coupled with a love of organisation we managed to pull it off and have our wedding day exactly how we wanted it.

 

Why did you chose your parent’s garden to hold the celebrations and why a marquee? I think a marquee wedding reception can be a lot more personal than the alternatives. It’s a blank canvas to customise and decorate however you want and can incorporate the wedding theme into the surroundings so easily. There is a bit more planning involved in having your reception in a marquee, however, you have the freedom of deciding on the size, shape, the layout, the size of the dance floor which makes the entire event unique, rather than being bound to a hotel reception room standard layout and package options. It also meant that the dancing didn’t have to stop at a certain time which was a big plus for us.
My parents have lived in the same house since I was born and spent so many fantastic years growing up there. It was always the dream to get married in our church and to have the reception at home as it is such a special place filled with so many great memories. We are so lucky to have had such a great marquee in the garden and would encourage anyone who has the space to do so to seriously consider it.

Would you mind telling us which caterer you chose and what your menu was ? IMG_1620
Our caterer was Robinsons of Wingate. They were absolutely brilliant and let us choose our menu from scratch. They served our reception drinks accompanied by some delicious canape’s as people enjoyed the sunshine. Our wedding breakfast started with farmhouse pate with autumn fruit chutney. This was followed by Durham beef with Yorkshire puddings which was served with dauphinoise potatoes and vegetables. This proved to be extremely popular as we had a full joint of beef on each table and we had chosen designated carvers, complete with chefs hat and apron. It was a great way to get the table talking and laughing, especially when tables had guests that didn’t already know each other. This was followed by a choice of Eton mess or summer berries in a champagne jelly, then finishing the meal with coffee and wedding cake. Robinsons provided everything we needed and were there throughout the planning process to make sure the catering was exactly how we wanted it, I really cannot recommend them enough.

Which other companies helped make your day so special?    We wanted the wedding to be as personal as possible and so where we could we did a lot ourselves and with the help of friends. Our flowers were arranged by a family friend who is a retired florist and our cakes were made by my mum and a friend. Having said that, there were a few things we couldn’t manage ourselves; Essence of the Moment was our photographer, Jed was brilliant and had some great ideas, and North East Soiree was our band who provided a fantastic mix of ceilidh band and modern band, getting everyone on the dance floor and making sure we all had a fantastic time.

 

 

What was your wedding colour theme? Where did you get your inspiration from? IMG_1832
With David being from a Scottish family and myself from an English family we wanted to have a theme that combined the two. Picking out the predominant colour from David’s family tartan we decided on Navy blue as our main colour scheme with a contrasting ivory. We had Scottish thistles and cream roses as the theme of our bouquets, and hints of tartan ribbon throughout. We wanted the wedding to be fun and relaxed and had croquet and boules set up in other areas of the garden for guests to enjoy throughout the reception.
 

 

Do you have any tips or hints to other Brides and Grooms planning their wedding day?  I think many brides have an idea as they start planning their wedding of exactly how they want it to be which is great but not IMG_1639always practical. I think my number one piece of advice would be to be willing to consider alternatives. Other people can have brilliant ideas that you may not have considered. Also, try not to get too stressed about it all. Make a list of the big things that need booking e.g. church, marquee, band, photographer, caterer, florist and get that done as soon as possible. After that you can relax a little and enjoy thinking about the smaller, exciting things like decoration and personal touches. Try and remember though, throughout the planning process, that the most important part of the day is that you’ll end it married to the love of your life and in the grand scheme of things the colour of the napkins aren’t that important.

And finally what was the most memorable part of your day? This is a tough one, it was all so fantastic! Walking down the aisle with my Dad and seeing David ahead of me was such a magical feeling. Also, changing into my trainers to walk up to Penshaw Monument for our photos won’t be forgotten. However, spending the afternoon and evening (and a lot of the following morning) in the marquee, surrounded by our family and friends, enjoying great food, drinks, music and each others company was a great way to celebrate our marriage.

Marquee versus Kata Tent?

 

Certainly one of the more interesting developments in the event industry offerings during the last few years has been the ‘Kata Tent’. Having been seen at a couple of well publicised celebrity functions, there is undoubtedly a niche popularity for them.

However, like all things in life, there are pro’s and con’s to the design. The following comments are made from feedback we have had from customers and guests:

  • Kata’s are different to look at and have a pleasing aesthetic. The uniqueness/novelty value may start to wear off as they are seen more widely. It is possible to dress a marquee to personalise the event as required and with the addition of pagoda receptions etc, can look totally individual.
  • Kata’s are expensive to hire. We have costed similar sized events and found our prices for equivalent to less than half that of the kata. Partly this because the kata skins naturally lose their waterproof qualities, and so need regular replacement.
  • Kata’s usually only come with matting on the floor. Matting can be supplied for a marquee too. However if the ground is very wet, matting performance is poor. A marquee is easily and usually fitted with a carpeted wooden floor that will give a dry, level and secure base.
  • Kata’s have no windows or doors. A flap and a fire-pit may be lovely on a cold Finnish night, not so good on a steamy (we do get them) summer’s day…
  • Kata’s are inefficient in their use of space – the space in the photo below was advertised as for up to 80 people. Count them. All those poles get in the way!
